CANTILAN BANK CHRISTMAS PARTY 2008: "AUSTERE BUT STILL A NIGHT OF FUN"

Last Saturday, December 20, 2008, I traveled again the muddy highway going to Surigao del Sur to attend the annual Christmas Party of the Cantilan Bank Incorporated. Actually my trip was hitting two birds in one stone. At 2 pm, we were in Tandag to witness the wedding ceremony of our friend, Atty. Vito T. Gotostos, now an Assistant Provincial Fiscal of Surigao del Norte. Atty. Vito was a colleague of our Department of Agrarian Reform days. He tied the knot with Miss Almira Su, at the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral, Tandag, SDS.

To my good o'le friend Vito, congratulations. Welcome to the club!

Anyway, just as the ceremony ended at past 5 pm, we immediately sped away back to Cantilan for the Christmas party. We arrived at Cantilan at past 6:30 and after a short dressing up at home, we immediately proceeded to the venue. Dinner was served when we arrived there. We sit on the table occupied by the Surigao City branch.

After feasting on lechon, beef recipes and fruits, the formal program began. The night’s event was hosted by Grace Naumi Lim and Paul Kenneth Loren. The doxology was presented by some selected staff of the Corporate Headquarters. Then it was followed by a production number by all of the CHQ personnel. Cute.

In his speech, Bank President, Lt. Gen. William K. Hotchkiss III (ret.), assured everyone that the Bank’s financial status remains stable and afloat despite the current global economic and financial crisis. In a computer presentation, he reported the Bank’s current state. I believe that the clear and simple presentation was enough to comfort wary investors who have witnessed how other rural banks fall by the wayside.

This year’s presentation was divided into two categories. The southern branches compete in the dance presentation while the northern branches, in the choral competition. The visual and auditory assault started with the dance presentation by the Madrid Branch. Since then there was no let up. Madrid was followed by Tandag Branch, then Tagbina etc.

In the choral competition, Butuan City branch made the opening salvo. Known for its reputation as the team to beat in the choral competition, Butuan City never failed to astound the crowd with their simple but very excellent rendition of “Carol of the Bells” and a Cebuano Christmas song. The crowd erupted in cheers.

Butuan was followed by the Surigao City branch which sang Ryan Cayabyab’s “Kumukutikutitap.” However their voices are hardly heard because they are quite away from the microphone. I motioned them to get closer to the microphone but I think they did not hear me.

After Surigao, the crowd was profusely cheering the Socorro branch choral group in their yellow attire and with their matching choreography. Their voice quality was excellent and the choreography, well executed. Socorro branch is tops.

Other highlights are the San Agustin branch in their hiphop dance, the Cantilan branch in their animated number, and the Tubod branch with their red Filipiniana costume and complete attendance on stage.

In the end, Madrid won the dance competition while Socorro took home the top prize in the Choral competition.

After the competitions came my most favorite part of the evening. The dance-all-the-way portion. Lights were dimmed, the speakers blared, beers were opened, and beverages were served.

From efficient workers, Cantilan Bank employees and officials transformed into party animals overnight as everyone enjoyed dancing to hiphop and RNB music mixes.

MSC CENTENNIAL IN SURIGAO CITY TODAY

Yesterday I observed that there are some elderly foreigners roaming around the city. Later I realized that the MSC fathers were having their Centennial in this very city today and tomorrow. What a coincidence that my birthday December 11 is the same day the MSCs will celebrate their centennial.

If you are yet unaware, MSC stands for Missioneros de Sagrado Corazon or the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Compared to other missionary groups, MSC is relatively young as compared to the Agustinians, Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans and Recollects. It is founded by Jules Chevalier sometime in the early 1800's, much more like by the other new missionary group, the SVD. In fact in Surigao, the SVD and the MSC shared mission territories. Yesterday as I was taking pictures of the MSC exhibit at the Luneta park someone asked "Unsay meaning anang MSC bay?" I thought of answering it but since the question was posed to his friend, I refrain from answering out of courtesy.

This is a big event. I am not really conversant about the history of the MSC fathers but what I can recall is that they began their mission here in Surigao in early 1900's and was called the "Dutch Missionaries" since the origin of the congregation is in The Netherlands. Later I noticed that from Surigao to Agusan most of the parishes were established by the MSC Fathers. In fact of the five Bishops of Surigao that served Surigao, two are MSC prelates. They are Bishop Jan C. Vrakking (2nd) and Bishop Charles van den Ouwelant (3rd). Ouwelant was later succeeded by SVD Bishop Miguel C. Cinches.

As I look into the pictures, I noticed some familiar names. Fr. Mallman of the Mallman Center fame in Cantilan was one of them. There's Father Abao whom I met eight years ago, when a kababayan (the Abaos are primarily from my hometown in Camiguin)brought me to the Communications Foundation for Asia in Sta. Mesa, a huge complex building made of red bricks. Are you aware of Gospel Comics? Its actually a publication of MSC Fathers. Aside from comics they also offer trainings in various media practice such as broadcasting, filmmaking and TV production.

I was even able to enter their provincialate office and have dinner there. I was able to meet some of the priest but I regret I cant remember any of their faces now.

Anyway, like I said this is a big event and I think the faithful from all over Caraga region should cherish this milestone and pay tribute to these untiring missionaries who kept the flame of faith alive in this part of the country.

To the MSC Fathers, Congratulations.

Postcript: A Pontifical Mass for this great event will be held at 4 o clock this afternoon to be presided by His Excellency Edward Joseph Adams, the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines.

The 12th branch of Cantilan Bank opened last Friday, October 10, 2008 in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur. The event was graced by the bank’s top executives and all the members of the Board of Directors led by Bank President and Chairman of the Board, Lt. Gen. William K. Hotchkiss III (ret.), Executive Committee Chair, Brig. Gen. Charles Y. Hotchkiss (ret.) and General Manager Raul B. Urbiztondo. The occasion was also attended by local officials of the municipality of San Francisco and the nearby towns of Agusan del Sur.

The activity kicked off with a motorcade around downtown San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, followed by the branch blessing and the cutting of ceremonial ribbon by Hon. Antonio Petalcorin, with President Hotchkiss. In his inspirational message, Bank President Hotchkiss stressed that Cantilan Bank came to San Francisco not so much of making money but to become an active partner of progress and development of the town and of the province of Agusan del Sur in general. Mindful of the financial crisis that is stalking the world today, President Hotchkiss whipped optimism that the world and the banking sector in particular can weather and survive the crisis.

The opening activity was capped with the presentation of the bank’s products and services that has become its trademark in gaining the investor’s and depositor’s confidence in entrusting their money with Cantilan Bank through the years.

With the opening of its 12th branch in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, the “encirclement” of Caraga with Cantilan Bank branches was finally completed. The other branches of Cantilan Bank are the Main Branch at Cantilan, Surigao del Sur and its branches in Madrid, Tandag, San Agustin, San Miguel and Tagbina in Surigao del Sur; Claver, Tubod, Socorro and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte; and Butuan City in Agusan del Norte.

Surigao City – A group of school children bagged the top prize of this year’s edition of Surigao City’s Bonok Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival held last September 9, 2008 at the Surigao City National High School grounds in Barangay San Juan of this city. Donning a colorful costume of dominated by red and yellow colors and adopting the tribe name of “Tribu Hiyas ng Kalikasan”, the contingent from Surigao West Central Elementary School also dominated and practically collected all the other awards by winning the Best in Costume award, the Best Choreography award and the Best in Street Dancing award.

The winning contingent was followed by the Municipality of General Luna, the Municipality of Jabonga in Agusan del Norte and the Surigao del Norte National High School which finished first, second and third runner up respectively. The Municipality of Jabonga, Agusan del Norte also won the Best in Musicality award. The Grand Champion went home with P250,000 cash prize, the first runner up with P200,000, the second runner up with P150,000 and the third runner up at P100,000. A consolation prize of P10,000 was also given to other contingents such as those from Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, Butuan City, Gingoog City and Saint Jude Thaddeus Institute of Technology.

Surigao City – “San Nicolas de Tolentino is a peacemaker.” This was one of the highlights of the homily of Surigao Bishop Antonieto D. Cabajog before a capacity crowd of parishioners and devotees, during the Pontifical Mass in the City Cathedral on the occasion of the fiesta of Sr. San Nicolas de Tolentino, the patron saint of the city and the titular of the diocese.

Saint Nicolas of Tolentino was an Augustinian monk who at the age of 25, preached at Tolentino, Italy. According to Bishop Cabajog, when Saint Nicolas was a preacher there, the place was in chaos. Leaders and ruling families were fighting each other for control and power. All of these however, ended when Saint Nicolas intervened and pacified the feuding groups who eventually reconciled with one another. In effect, Saint Nicolas de Tolentino converted discord to reconciliation, hatred to forgiving. Bishop Cabajog mirrored this example to the current peace crisis in Mindanao where he reminded everyone to emulate and make as an inspiration the virtues of Saint Nicolas de Tolentino of peacemaking in finally achieving that elusive peace in Mindanao.

Bishop Cabajog also emphasized the meaning of the name Nicolas which means “victory of the people.” He mentioned the three ills that are plaguing the world today which are “chaos, darkness and evil,” which the people should overcome. He lamented on the prevalence of the culture of death in our society today and particular referred to the anti life bills pending in the House of Representatives as primary examples of this kind of culture. He expressed gratitude to the Surigaonon faithful’s fortitude in expressing their opposition to these anti-life bills which he considered as victory enough for the people against the culture of death.

In the end, Saint Nicolas de Tolentino symbolizes the man’s hunger for God and the fulfillment of that hunger through the bread of Christ.

The High Mass, the centerpiece of this religious celebration in the city, was attended by city officials led by Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra and provincial officials led by Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace Barbers, the diocesan and missionary priests serving in the diocese of Surigao which covers the parishes of mainland Surigao, and islands of Dinagat, Siargao and Bucas Grande, priests from the neighboring diocese of Butuan, nuns, and the parishioners and devotees of Saint Nicolas of Tolentino.

Surigao City - A Nursing student from Saint Paul University of Surigao (SPUS) earned the nod of the judges in the 2008 edition of Mutya nan Surigao beauty pageant held in Surigao del Norte Provincial Convention Center Tuesday night, September 2, 2008. Ms. Jasoline B. Salinas was named Mutya nan Surigao-Universe along with Ms. Mary Ann Masangcay of Dapa, Surigao del Norte and Ms. Christine Jane Luib of Surigao del Norte National High School who were also proclaimed Mutya Nan Surigao- Pilipinas and Mutya Nan Surigao-Earth respectively.

Ms. Jasoline Salinas, who looked like actress Ehra Madrigal, was the crowd favorite early on, eliciting loud cheers and applause from the audience every time she walked on the ramp and after giving short but precise reply during the interview portion. She also won the Best in Ethnic Costume and Best in Casual Wear awards. Surprisingly, another crowd favorite, 16 year old Loriane Desoloc of the Caraga Regional Science High School never made it to the top three. Her tanned skin coupled with her well endowed physique won her the admiration of the crowd. She however won the Best in Gown and the Miss Media awards.

While only three got the major awards, most of the contestants did not went home empty handed as they too received some other awards like Saint Paul University’s Ms. Eloreze Eder (Miss Congeniality), Ms. Christine Jane Luib (Miss Photogenic), and Ms. Mary Ann Masangcay (Best in Beach Wear and the Fresh Look Award).

The search for Mutya Nan Surigao is one of the highlights in the City Charter Day celebration and the forthcoming feast of Saint Nicolas de Tolentino, the patron saint of Surigao City on September 10, 2008.

This years’ edition adopted a new format wherein the three top contestants will be chosen as representative of the city for Binibining Pilipinas, Mutya Ng Pilipinas and Miss Earth thus choosing the three winners to represent the city on the respective beauty contests. The event was organized by Mr. Jake Miranda, President of the Surigao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Maradjao Event Productions.

Surigao City – The City of Surigao celebrated its 38th Charter anniversary on August 31, 2008 at the city hall with a theme “Achieving Success and Continuity…Looking Towards The Future…” Mayor Alfonso Casurra led the ceremonies together with Vice Mayor Rico Salvador Sering and members of the City Council, city officials, barangay officials and employees. Also attending the ceremony were Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Ace Barbers, former Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers, Vice Governor Noel P. Catre, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, other provincial officials and employees.

The day long activity kicked off with a parade participated by the different sectors, different barangays, civic organizations and the business and educational institutions within the city. It was followed by flag raising ceremonies at the city hall which includes the raising of the City and the Provincial flags. It was then followed by the presentation of the Rotary awardees of Outstanding Surigaonons which include Mr. Miles Chua, the current Vice President of Sun Cellular Network, the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres and the Surigao City College of Science and Technology.

The highlight of the activity celebration however is the presence of Senate President Manuel Villar who is the guest speaker. Speaker Villar arrived accompanied by Surigao del Sur 2nd District Congressman Florencio Garay and TV news anchor Martin Andanar and was welcomed by City Mayor Alfonso Casurra and Governor Robert Ace Barbers. In his introductory speech, Governor Barbers urged the youth to emulate the qualities of Senator Villar by saying that “if there is sipag at tiyaga, one will be successful.” He capped it by assuring the Surigaonons support for Sen. Villar “ for whatever your plans in the future, we assure, Surigaonons will be behind you.” Sen. Villar reciprocated this gesture by hinting Governor Barbers is a national political material. “Mapalad ang Surigao kay Governor Barbers. Ito ay isang personalidad na kailangan ng ating bansa para malutas ang kanyang mga problema at suliranin.”

Villar, in his inspirational speech, urged everybody to be hopeful and to have a confidence in themselves. If one cannot find a job, there’s always an alternative which is to go to business. He made an example of his life, which has humble beginnings, as a shrimp vendor in Divisoria Market, which he turned around to become one of the country’s successful real estate developer and now as Senate President. “Ang pakiusap ko lang, huwag ilagay sa inyong mga sarili na kayo ay hamak na Pilipino lamang. Wala tayong ikahiya. Maraming beses na akong bumagsak, tayo lang ako nang tayo. (What I ask is that don’t be mired with the idea that you are only an ordinary Filipino We have nothing to be ashamed of. I have fallen so many times, I just kept on getting up).” In the end, Villar said once the pride and dignity of the people will be restored, the country will improve.

Villar then received a plaque of appreciation from Mayor Casurra assisted by Governor Ace Barbers and afterwards witnessed the colorful parade participated in by the different sectors of Surigao City.

Surigao City – The high fuel cost is turning off potential operators from reopening the discontinued fast craft line between Surigao City and Siargao Island. This was disclosed in a DXKS RPN 9 radio interview with Vice Governor Noel Catre. Accordingly, requests were made to the operators of previous fast craft ferries, Aska Queen and Fortune Jet plying the growing but costly line between Surigao and Siargao Island, but the said ferries beg off because of the prohibitive fuel cost. With the high fuel cost, the ferries cannot afford to impose reasonable fare rates to the riding public.

Indeed, there is a big gap in transportation to Siargao Island. Last year, some participants of Hobie Challenge Cup commented that the Siargao-Surigao trip is time consuming. While the market is continuously growing, the present facility is inadequate to cope up with the demand. Without the availability of a fast craft transport, travel to Siargao take up to four hours. A fast craft will only take 2 hours. At present, Surigao-Siargao Island is served by a ro-ro vessel of Montenegro Shipping Lines, MV Sea Angel, and a number of motorized outrigger bancas.

MAYOR MONDANO FAILS TO SECURE CERTIORARI AGAINST SURIGAO DEL NORTE SP

Surigao City- Mainit Mayor Ramon Mondano failed in his bid to secure “preliminary prohibitory injunction” by way of a petition for certiorari against the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Surigao del Norte. The action stems from the decision of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan denying Mondano’s Motion to Dismiss on his administrative case filed by a medical officer. In his petition for certiorari, Mondano questioned the procedure of the dismissal of his motion citing that only the presiding officer, Vice Governor Noel Catre signed the dismissal order and excluded all the members of the SP considering that it is a collegial body.

In its response, the Sanggunian Panlalawigan, reasoned out that the denial is just an interlocutory order and hence do not need the concurrence of the all SP members. Under its own rules, only final decisions require the concurrence of the members of the Sanggunian and that a Motion to Dismiss is a prohibited pleading.

In a May 19, 2008 decision of RTC Judge Floripinas Buyser, the court uphold the arguments of the SP which it described as “well taken, meritorious, and supported by well established jurisprudence.”

Mayor Ramon Mondano of Mainit was charged with an administrative case before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan by Dr. Ramie G. Hipe, Medical Officer V of Mainit District Hospital for grave abuse of authority. Among the acts complained of were the padlocking and the cutting off of water and electricity supply to the doctor’s quarters where the complainant is staying. Dr. Ramie G. Hipe is the sister of former Mayor Rogelio Gatpolintan, whom Mayor Mondano defeated in last years elections.

CANTILAN BANK CHRISTMAS PARTY 2007

It was my first time to attend the much anticipated Christmas Party of Cantilan Bank Incorporated. This year’s activity was held at the Pedro Arreza Gymnasium in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur on December 16. It was a very well attended event which was graced by the presence of President and Chairman of the Board, Lt. Gen. William K. Hotchkiss III (Ret.), EXECOM Chair Brig. Gen. Charles Y. Hotchkiss (Ret.), Cantilan Mayor Tomasa L. Guardo, some Cantilan municipal councilors, the stockholders and the Board of Directors, the management and staff and the rank and file employees of the Bank and their families.

As soon as I arrived at the venue, a red carpet welcome was made. People showed up in their best outfits. I cant help having this Oscar Award Night feeling, I feel like Tom Hanks. There’s no dearth of handsome men and pretty women in the crowd.

The activity kicked off with the lighting of the Christmas Lights at the Luneta park particularly the “Banug” monument led by no less than CBI President Lt. Gen. William K. Hotchkiss, III (Ret.) After the usual ceremonies, dinner followed. The food was excellent courtesy of Meg’s Catering Services. There were lechon baboy, lechon baka, humba, chicken inasal, beef steak, and vegetable salads. Desserts include gastronomic delights such as carrot cake, chocolate cake and array of fruits.

Shortly afterwards, Bank President Lt. Gen. William K. Hotchkiss, III (Ret.) made a year end report mentioning the milestones for the year as well as the plans for the future. Among the highlights mentioned was the successful opening of two city branches this year, the Surigao City Branch (March 2007) and the Butuan City Branch (November 2007). He also made a special mention of the major facelift made on the Tandag branch making it one of the best, if not the best and modern infrastructure in Tandag City. He declared to the crowd that the Bank will launch an expansion for the next three years with the short term goal of encircling the Caraga region with branches of Cantilan Bank. For this year, Cantilan Bank Inc. also won its 4th Eagle Award by MABS and USAID.

He also mentioned opening of a current account with Land Bank of the Philippines-Surigao City as the clearing unit, the setting up of an ATM machine and the launching of the cell phone banking making Cantilan Bank Inc. global in reach, a feat which only a few rural banks have achieved, if not, the first of its kind. He also announced the construction of CBI buildings in Surigao City and San Miguel, Surigao del Sur.

The centerpiece activity of the night was the pop dance competition participated in by the 11 branches including the Corporate Headquarters (CHQ). Here are some of the pictures. The contest ended with Cantilan branch winning the first prize followed by Corporate Headquarters (CHQ) and the Socorro, Surigao del Norte branch. Maayo gyud ni taga Socorro ba! The program was closed by a closing remarks byBrig. Gen. Charles Y. Hotchkiss (Ret.) who exhorted the employees to work hard, inspiring them that the success of the businesses of the bank will trickle down to them in the form of generous incentives and benefits.

The night was capped by a non stop dancing courtesy of a live band from Mario’s Grille in Surigao City. The crowd was treated with the stand up comic act of one of the band members.

I have attended so many Christmas parties but I could say that the Cantilan Bank Inc. is just a notch higher in my recent memory. The food and drinks were excellent and the crowd, wholesome. I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to be a part of such a joyous occasion. There is only one appropriate word to describe the entire activity.

HUGE SURIGAO CITY FIRE RAZED AN ENTIRE BLOCK

A huge fire broke out in the vicinity of Kaimo-Gimena and Kaimo-Borja Sts. Surigao City at about 5:30 PM last night, November 2, All Saints Day. So huge was the fire that it gobbled up an entire block. Only the office of the DTI remained standing in the fiery aftermath. Among the houses destroyed were the ancestral house of the Fetalvero's, the Robillos, Guyano and De Guzman families.

Initial reports showed that the fire started in the Guyano residence in the interior part of the block due to an unattended candle. It quickly spread to nearby houses made of wooden materials.

The fire, aggravated by strong winds, was feared to spread out in other blocks particularly towards Rizal St, the main thoroughfare of the city. Hampering the fire fighting efforts are the bystanders who just content on viewing the fire instead of helping the affected residents. Mayor Casurra was displeased that some even brought their children to watch the fire as if it was entertainment.

The arrival of fire engines from the municipality of Mainit and Placer finally put the fire under control with their huge hoses and strong water pressure.

SUMILAO FARMERS REACHED SURIGAO OCTOBER 23, 2007

The Sumilao farmers who embarked on a 1500 km march from Sumilao,Bukidnon to Manila to dramatized their demand for land, finally reached Surigao City last October 23. On October 24, 2007, they staged a short program at the Surigao City Luneta Park before they pushed to Lipata, Surigao City for a ferry ride to Liloan in Southern Leyte. Peasant leaders and activists took turns in delivering speeches explaining their plight to the public and lambasting the ruling of then Executive Secretary Ruben Torres in rejecting the DAR ruling favoring the distribution of the Quisumbing estate to the farmers.

The activity was also graced by alternative music singer Bayang Barrios who gave a touching rendition of the song "Bathala."

Bishops from all over Mindanao converge in Surigao City to attend the 13^th Mindanao Sulu Pastoral Conference in Pope John XIII Pastoral Center in Surigao City. Bishop Antonieto Dumagan Cabajog welcomes all the delegates from the different dioceses, prelatures and vicariates of Mindanao island. The activity commence with a Holy Mass at the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral, presided by Bishop Cabajog and concelebrated by other bishops. This year’s conference carries the theme “ Restoring Moral Values Through Basic Ecclesial Communities”

ADVENTURE RACE "CARRERA HABAGAT" BLAST OFF TODAY IN SURIGAO

Sun.Star: All is set for this year’s edition of the Carrera Habagat 2007 Siargao Bucas Grande, which starts today at the Surigao City hall.

Fourteen teams will be getting a taste of the four-day non-stop adventure racing that has become known all over Asia for being one of the toughest adventure races there is.Set to lead the carnage is Team Kalit, which is now divided into two groups—Pepsi Kalit and Plantation Bay Kalit.

Team Kalit, last year’s winner, finished the four-day race in just two days, after opting to continue to race, while all the others were resting during the nights.

Another team to watch out for is Iligan Pride Gazul, who had been one of the strongest challengers of the race and TNF Avaya. Also providing attraction is the team of mountain racer Merlita Arias, who teams up with foreign nationals in this new endeavor. Other teams include Davao, Ibaan, Iligan, Iloilo, Conquer, Bayantel, Nomad 420, Dumaguete, Simon, Blood Red, Katilingban Ilonggo Kalinga Kalikasan Mountaineers Inc., TNF, KIKKM and UTA among others.

Skills

Racers’ abilities to navigate will be put to test as they have to find their way around the two islands known as the surfing capital of the country.

As the organizers said, one of their purposes for holding such event is to showcase unheralded islands in the country that pose great potential for tourism, thus the decision to include Bucas Grande, an islet off Surigao, which reportedly bears a striking resemblance to the Rock Islands of Palau. Aside from navigating, racers will need their expertise in rope handling, trekking, mountain biking, swimming, orienteering and paddling. They also need to get past all 40 control points plotted all over the race course before making it to the finish line.

The race will have its cutoff on Friday, which will be capped by the awarding ceremonies at the Cabuntog, General Luna. - Sun.Star

Last Sunday, the De la Salle Green Archers captured the 70th UAAP basketball men's crown. One of the star players of the squad is from Tandag, Suirgao del Sur, JV Casio. I was surprised when he greeted his family on TV after the victory. "Hi nanay, sa lola ko there in Tandag, Surigao del Sur..." was something I heard from here. It will only be a matter of time if JV Casio will land in the PBA, the country's premier professional league.

If that happens he will join his fellow provincemates in Surigao del Sur who make it to the PBA. Zandro Limpot from Tago and Sunday Salvacion of Tandag. I have heard stories too that Jimmy Alapag trace his roots from the province.

SPECIES FOUND IN MT. HILONG HILONG ADLAY FORST RESERVE

Everytime I passed at Adlay, Carrascal, Surigao del Sur, I really wanted to stop to see whats on the billboard posted near Adlay Elementary School. The billboard states the different species of fauna found in Adlay Forest Reserve. Some of the species are only found in the country, while the rarest ones are only found in Mindanao Island.

Then on one occasion I finally, was able to stop and photographed the said billboard. True, some of this species are sometimes found in the roads especially going to Red Mountain (Noventa).

WADE GOODAL LEADS AUSTRALIAN 1-2-3 FINISH IN THE 13TH BILLABONG SIARGAO INTERNATIONAL SURFING CUP

Reports coming in from Siargao Island that Wade Goodall of Australia won the 13th Billabong Siargao International Surfing Cup in Cloud 9, General Luna, Siargao Island.

Runners Up were Nick Vasicek of Australia and Dave Reardon Smith also of Australia who finished 1st and 2nd runner up respectively.

Fourth placer was Hawaiian Macua Rothman. On the other hand, Filipinos could only manage to advance in the qualifying and they are Martin Taniegra (Quezon), Carlito Nodalo (GL), Rodolfo Alcala (GL), and Dionesio Espejon (GL).

HISTORY OF CLOUD 9 INVITATIONAL SURFING CUP

Surfing started in Siargao Island sometime in June 1980. Two young men Tony Arruza, an American of Cuban descent, and Steve Jones, an Australian came to General Luna in seach of a "perfect wave." They surfed in that area now knon as the "Jacking Horse" near what is now Cloud 9. Word spread around in the surfing world that there is a secret place in Suiargao Island that has a good surf. Intermittently, surfers came and one of tehm wa a man who introduced himself as Max Walker. He came surfing the area in what is now Cloud 9. He seemed to be a troubled man but he was legendary man who founded several surfing havens in Southeast Asia like Nias and G-Land in Indonesia. His real name was John Michael Boyum.

Then in 1992, the world famous surfing photographer John Callahan together with legendary people in surfing like Kevin Davidson, John Slater and Taylor Knox had photos take riding the big surf in Cloud 9. Said photos landed in the surfing magazines in all languages all over the world. "Cloud 9" became so famous that what used to be a trickle of surfers became a mass coming from all corners of the world.

In 1995, the local government of General Luna together with some of the expatriates from Australia organized the surfing competition dubbed as the "Siargao Surfing Classic." The event was successful that it caught the attention of the world, paving the way for the first Siargao Surfing Cup in 1996. This time, the Provincial Government of Surigao del Norte and the Department of tourism is now involved.

The Bonok Bonok Marajaw Karajaw parade will be held on Monday September 10,2007 at 1:00 o clock in the afternoon. This years parade will begin at Borromeo St. It would pass through the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral, turn left to Roxas St., pass at Cambangate Chapel, then turn left at Rizal St., towards the City Hall.

All presentations of participating contingents will be performed at a makeshift stage in front of the City Hall. This is made after the Grandstand is closed for renovation.

There are 7 participating contingents this year with 5 out of towners which include the Municipality of Bacuag (defending champion), Province of Misamis Oriental, Butuan City, Cabadbaran City and the Municipality of Jabonga, Agusan del Norte. The other two is city based, Surigao del Norte National High School and Surigao City Pilot School.
